The Carmona panchayat at its special meeting held on Monday has unanimously resolved to issue the NOC to the Tourism Department to set up mobile toilets at Zalor beach.
The panchayat’s decision comes against the backdrop of a letter received from the Tourism department, requesting the Carmona panchayat to issue them the NOC to put up mobile toilets at Zalor beach.
Carmona Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge informed that the panchayat took the decision to issue the NOC as the body received a request from the Tourism department seeking permission to set up the mobile toilets.
On 26 June last, when the toilets were attempted to be put up on Zalor beach, the sarpanch and the villagers had vociferously objected to the move, forcing the trucks carrying the structures to return back.
Zalor beach has been a bone of contention between Carmona and Varca panchayats over their jurisdiction of the beach. While Varca claims Zalor beach, Carmona has disputed the claim, saying the records were manipulated during the survey process and has resolved to file a petition in HC over the issue.
“Everyone knows Zalor beach belongs to Carmona but the issue is politicised due to a upcoming hotel project in the area,” Jorge added.
Saying that the Carmona panchayat will request the Tourism department to put up four-arm lights at the beach, the sarpanch said the panchayat will support any development at Zalor beach as long as Carmona panchayat is taken into confidence. “I consider it as a victory for the people of my village who are emotionally attached to Zalor beach,” he said, while expressing his thanks to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in resolving the issue.
