PORVORIM
The Tourism Department organised its second Carnival float parade at Porvorim on Friday, attracting thousands of spectators from diverse backgrounds. Over 45 floats participated in the event, including 7 traditional floats, 6 funk floats, 13 from clubs/institutions, and 4 family floats. The parade, featuring 14 clowns, commenced at the Institute of Hotel Management around 4:30 pm and concluded at ACDIL High School.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar, and Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye inaugurated the event, with King Momo Clive Anthony Gracias also in attendance.
The Tourism Minister emphasised the non-religious nature of Carnival, highlighting its role in preserving Goa’s rich culture and fostering unity among different segments of society. Carnival and Shigmo, being essential festivals, serve as cultural showcases for tourists visiting Goa. Khaunte lauded Porvorim as a growing constituency and stressed the celebration’s importance for showcasing the essence of Carnival.
Dr Chandrakant Shetye appreciated Khaunte’s inclusive approach to the development of all constituencies and commended the decision to start Shigmo festival from Bicholim this year, aligning with historical significance.
Saligao MLA Kedar Naik praised Khaunte for breaking tradition and introducing the Carnival parade in Porvorim and Morjim, ensuring residents could enjoy the festivities without travelling to Panaji.
Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar expressed gratitude for extending the Carnival parade to Morjim, emphasising that Carnival is a festival for all people, and every constituency should have the opportunity to partake in the celebration.
