Margao gears up with call for showcasing traditional floats

MARGAO
The stage is set for the grand Carnival parade along the traditional route in the commercial capital on Sunday even as the Margao Carnival Committee has insisted that participating floats showcase traditions and heritage of the State instead of promoting western culture and music.

Addressing the media on Friday, Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar and Chairperson of the Margao Carnival Committee Milagrina Gomes on Tuesday said the Indian Navy will participate in the Carnival float parade at Margao on Sunday.

The MMC Chairperson told the media that the Tourism Minister and officials have issued directions to the Carnival organising committees in the State to issue instructions to the participating floats to showcase and focus on the State traditions and heritage.

Asked to elaborate on the instructions received from the Tourism Department on the nature of floats participating in the parade, the MMC Chairperson said a 4-5 member committee constituted by the Tourism Department comprising of personalities from different fields has laid stress and focus on showcasing Goa’s traditions. Instead of harping on musical bands and western music, the committee had insisted the floats showcase the local heritage and traditions,” Damu said.

“I am happy that the Indian Navy is participating in the Margao Carnival float parade. We have invited Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, MLAs Digambar Kamat, Vijai Sardesai and Ulhas  Tuenkar for the carnival parade,” Damu said.
