Beware, viral conjunctivitis or what is popularly known as sore eyes has raised its ugly head is believed to be fast spreading in the city over the last few days.
With school children prone to contracting the contagious disease, a couple of city-based schools in a precautionary measure have barred entry of students with red and swollen eyes out of fear that they might spread it to other students.
The Goan understands that a couple of students studying in different city-based schools were sent home by the class teachers after their eyes were found red and swollen. A teacher of the city-based school informed that the precautionary measure has been adopted to ensure that there’s no major outbreak of conjunctivitis in the school. “We have also stressed on hygiene amongst the students, advising them not to observe hygiene to stay away from sore eyes,” the teacher added.
A parent informed that when he went to drop his child to the school on Monday morning, the teacher instructed me to take my ward home after it was suspected that he has contracted conjunctivitis.
Another parent, whose child studies in another city-based school, informed that since her child’s eyes were found red, the teacher has informed her not to send my ward to school.
City-based doctor, Dr Ventakesh Hegde told The Goan that reports of conjunctivitis spreading in the city have come to light. He, however, said there’s nothing to panic, listing out simply hygiene to keep sore eyes at bay. “Irrespective of the age, be it adults or children, one precaution everyone has to observe is avoid touching one’s eyes without washing. Unless you wash your hands properly, touching eyes can invite conjunctivitis since the virus is spreading,” Dr Hegde added.
