A joint meeting of the traders, vendors, bankers, Margao Municipal Council officials and the government nodal officer, Anand Jadhav was held in the chamber of Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Y B Tawde with the avowed objective of convincing the traders and vendors to opt for cashless transactions with different modes of payments.
Both the president of the New Market Traders Association Vinod Shirodkar and Gandhi market leader Rajendra Azgaonkar, though not opposing the proposal for cashless transactions, made it clear that they can take a call on the proposal only after holding a general body meeting of their respective associations. And, given the fact that the Christmas festivities are in the air and the ensuing season is considered the most hectic period in the markets, the traders and vendors politely told the bankers and the nodal officer that it would be not possible to convene any general body meetings of their associations during the next one month. “How can we hold deliberations with our co-traders and vendors when all are preoccupied with the business activity because of the ensuing Christmas festival,” Shirodkar questioned the bankers.
The duo further told the bankers that they alone cannot take any unilateral decision on behalf of the traders, adding that they will take a call on the matter only in the New Year. The traders also pointed out that only marginal and small traders and vendors operate from the New market and Gandhi market and demanding to know whether the bankers expect these small time traders to opt for cashless transactions of Rs 20 and Rs 50.
