Caste certificates must be verified for benefits: Govt to HC

PANAJI

The Goa government on Monday told the Bombay High Court at Goa that members of the public seeking benefits arising from a case must first have their caste certificates examined and approved by the competent authority.

The submission was made during the hearing of a petition filed by disqualified Margao Municipal Council councillor Pooja Naik.

Naik has challenged the cancellation of her caste certificate and her subsequent disqualification from the council.

The court has directed the Goa government to file its reply in the matter.

The Urban Development Department had earlier disqualified Naik after the caste certificate she submitted during the municipal election was allegedly found to be false.
