CASUALTIES CAUSED DUE TO DISASTERS MATTER OF CONCERN, STATES SAWANT

Stressing the need to initiate steps to minimise and effectively deal with incidence caused due to disasters, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that instances of casualties caused due to disasters have become a matter of concern, and therefore the members of disaster management should come out with fruitful suggestions to avoid any eventualities occurring especially during the monsoon season.

Sawant chaired a preparatory meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority on monsoon preparedness at the Secretariat.

The Chief Minister said the cases of drowning wherein the youth succumb to life are coming to the fore and therefore it is necessary to initiate steps by the concerned department to adopt measures for creating awareness among the masses to protect and save their precious life.

Commending “Apada Mitra” for their efforts in saving life and property caused by disasters be it a cyclone, flooding, landslide, fire incidents, the Chief Minister stressed the need to encourage “Apada Mitra” and at the same time directed concerned authorities to see that more register voluntarily under disaster management.

"Requisite training will be imparted to them at the taluka level," he added.

Sawant assured to extend all possible assistance to deal with the impending South-West monsoon and to meet any challenges and eventualities that may pose danger.

The Chief Minister also directed the authorities to bring the Agriculture Department and Animal Husbandry sectors under the purview of disaster management so that the losses occurring in these sectors could be compensated by disaster management. The Chief Minister also directed Fire and Emergency Services to equip with all adequate equipment that is required to tackle the monsoon related damages and disasters.

The Chief Minister directed PWD, WRD and collectors to inspect landslide-prone areas before the onset of monsoon and take steps to prevent them.

Secretaries to the Government, collectors of South Goa and North Goa, HoD’s and Senior Officials of the State Disaster Management Authority were present at the meeting.
