The issue of traditional access to a group of houses at Bagwada, Morjim has been finally resolved after 19 years, with a hotel company on Thursday agreeing to leave out 3 metres of space for locals as access to their houses.
A meeting to this effect had taken place between hotel company officials, Morjim panchayat members, Pernem Deputy Collector in-charge Deepak Vaingankar, Pernem police and a group of locals, which was spread across three days.
The hotel company had blocked access for about four days, sparking protests among locals in the area. The Morjim panchayat then intervened in the matter and convened a meeting to resolve the issue.
"Due to efforts by Vaingankar, Morjim panchayat and company officials, this issue has finally been settled for once and all," said Prasad Shahapurkar.
He also expressed hope that the issue of the public crematorium would also be resolved in a similar manner.
"I thank the company for its cooperation and leaving out 3 metres of space for the traditional access," said Sarpanch Vaishali Shetgaonkar.
"The issue had been pending for 19 years. So many MLAs, sarpanchas and panchas got elected since then, but nobody could resolve the issue. It was Panch Prakash Shirodkar's approach to the issue that made it possible to resolve the matter," she added.
