With dog bites on the rise along the beach belt, especially during the lean tourism season, Cavelossim village has come out with a novel project – a dog shelter cum rescue shelter, besides a feeding area for dogs at Mobor beach.
Inaugurated by Mission Rabies, Director, Dr A Murugan on Friday, the Cavelossim village panchayat is perhaps the first panchayat which has come out with an initiative to keep stray and ferocious dogs on the beach at bay.
While complimenting the Cavelossim Panchayat to the novel project to handle stray dogs, Dr Murugan said other panchayats facing stray dogs and attacks by ferocious dogs can emulate the project undertaken by the Cavelossim panchayat.
Offering full support to the Cavelossim panchayat, Murugan said Mission Rabies will hold a special sterilisation camp at Cavelossim and extend all support to the Cavelossim project. “The dog shelter cum rescue shelter and feeding place will help to eliminate the stray dogs. Mission Rabies wants to say that dogs are safe since no single virus has been detected in the State in the last 7-8 years. This is due to the huge amount of money spent by Mission Rabies and Goa government on the project,” he said.
“We have to teach our children how to handle and manage dogs, how to get along with dogs and what to do when they are approached by ferocious dogs,” he added.
In his address, Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz said the dog shelter project is one step towards his commitment to avoid dog attacks especially on the beach areas where a lot of dogs are attacking the tourists and locals due to various reasons. “We have dog cages with which we will catch the furious dogs and isolate them and treat them with the help of animal welfare NGO,” Dixon said.
He said the full project is funded by Averina International Hotels Pvt Ltd as part of their CSR for the village.
