After the village coast was hit by sea erosion last month, the Cavelossim village sarpanch Dixon Vaz on Saturday knocked the doors of the State government and Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav to initiate measures to stop the soil erosion at Mobor beach.
The sarpanch accompanied by panch member Jesus D’Costa handed over a memorandum to the Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav in the presence of Chief Minister Promod Sawant and Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral with a plea to the Union Minister to take measures to stop the soil erosion.
In the memorandum, the sarpanch made a mention of the sea erosion that has hit the Mobor-Cavelosism coast in recent years due to rise in sea water. He pointed out that this has been a matter of great concern for the villagers, pointing out that the locals live in fear that the rising sea level might just wash away their habitation.
Dixon later told The Goan that all out efforts need to be initiated to ensure that the Mobor-Cavelossim coast is not destroyed and denuded by the soil erosion. “What has happened along the Mobor coast is indeed a matter of concern for the local populace and the stakeholders, including the fishermen,” he said.
It’s still unclear how many of the Goa government officials have paid a visit to Mobor for an inspection and to compile report on the destruction caused to the coast by the rising sea waters in the month of January.
Local villagers led by Cavelossim panchayat member Adv Irish Passainha had last month demanded that all the authorities should descend at the Cavelossim-Mobor stretch of the coast to personally see for themselves the extent of destruction before planning conservation measures.
The residents had further demanded strict action against those who were involved in the burning of trees and tampering of the sand dune, insisting that such destruction does not augur well for an ecologically fragile environment at Mobor, where river Sal meets the Arabian Sea.
