A group of residents of Varca and Cavelossim on Saturday strongly protested over the excavation of sand allegedly from CRZ area in Cavelossim and transporting the same to Fatrade in Varca village.
Agitated villagers led by social activist Sohail Furtado told the JCB contactor to stop the sand excavation work and warned the transport contractor to move the sand dumped at Fatrade back to Tamborim in Cavelossim.
Saying that they have come together to protest and demand action in the matter, Sohail said they have been given to understand that the activity had started on Friday evening and continued till late night. “When we residents from both Tamborim-Cavelossim and Fatrade-Varca assembled at the two spots, we have come to know that sand was extracted from Tamborim and transported to Fatrade”, he said.
Claiming that the sand dune at Tamborim has been allegedly tampered and destroyed by the activity, Sohail said the people will lodge an official complaint to the concerned authorities to initiate action.
To a question whether the activity is being carried out without the necessary permissions from the concerned authorities, he said the developer has put up a board at the site, but added that the authorities need to check and verify to what extent they have obtained the permissions.
