Raising objection against a construction in the fields in front of the St Alex Church, the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) on Saturday has demanded immediate stop in the ongoing work of the construction and also to demolish the existing structure constructed in low-lying tenanted agricultural area.
The CCF said the developer has taken advantage of the pandemic and the curfew imposed by the government to carry out the activities in the tenanted field.
“The construction/extension of the shed to the existing old structure should be stopped at once before the area turns into concretisation from the St Alex Church to Boa Viagem. Authorities concerned and the Calangute panchayat should take immediate action against the developer who has violated the law of the land,” alleged Premanand Diukar, President of CCF.
The CCF has forwarded a written complaint in the matter to the Member Secretary of the North Goa Planning and Development Authority, Bardez Deputy Collector and the Calangute Sarpanch.
The CCF president informed that the Parish Council of St Alex Church had in a written complaint in 2017 objected to the alleged construction coming up in the fields in front of the church.
They had also requested the competent authorities to revoke the permission if granted to safeguard the area and maintain a peaceful environment surrounding the religious place.
“Instead of acting against the complaint of the Parish Council, the local panchayat has turned a blind eye to the construction, allowing the developer to destroy fields,” he said.
According to Diukar, the Calangute panchayat had already passed a resolution to demolish the said construction but were yet to take action on the resolution.
