PANAJI: Amidst strong opposition and walk-out by two of its six members, the Standing Committee of the Corporation of City of Panaji at a meeting on Wednesday voted for a proposal to hike parking fees in Panaji. The proposal will be placed before the CCP corporators at its meeting on April 28.
The Standing Committee proposed to charge Rs 20 for upto two hours for vehicles like cars and jeeps, Rs 20 for every subsequent hour upto 12 hours, and Rs 100 per hour for parking over 12 hours.
As far as two-wheelers are concerned, the committee proposed to charge Rs 10 upto four hours, Rs 5 for every subsequent hour upto 12 hours, and Rs 50 per hour for parking for more than 12 hours.
The issue was deliberated by six members of the committee headed by CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado. While four members -- Surendra Furtado, Uday Madkaikar, Soraya Pinto Makhija and Asmita Kerkar -- agreed to the proposal, two members -- Shubham Chodankar and Vaidehi Naik -- strongly opposed it on the grounds that it would financially burden the common man.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Furtado informed, “As far as the pay parking is concerned, we have decided to hike the parking fees. The proposal has been approved by four members, which is a majority. The proposal will now be put up before the meeting of the Corporation be be held on the April 28, after which it will be cleared and then tendered.”
Stoutly defending the proposal, Furtado said the proposal was for not making money but ushering in a sense of traffic discipline in the city. “We are sitting here not to make money as far as parking is concerned, but we have to bring in certain type of discipline which was not seen in Panaji in the past. There are cases of triple parking too. Nearly 80 per cent of the cars are self-driven. If a person is coming to Panaji, he should get parking.”
Meanwhile, the committee also resolved to hike sanitation fees from next year.
“Existing sanitation fees annually are Rs 365 (collection of garbage “ wet and dry). We had thought of increasing it to Rs 750. But then we came to a conclusion that since half of the people of Panaji have already paid sanitation fees for this year along with the house tax, we will implement it from next year,” said Furtado.
“Similarly we were charging RS 200 per month for eatablishments. We had thought of increasing it to Rs 500 per month. But here too half of them have already paid. So it has been decided and resolved to increase the fees to Rs 750 for residential units and Rs 500 for establishments from next year. So there will be no resolution passed or placed before the standing committee next year. We will start collecting (hiked fees) from next year,” he informed.
