The Corporation of the City of Panaji on Monday passed a resolution in support of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which has triggered protests and violent turmoil across the country, particularly in the national capital where 43 people have been killed in violence.
In the resolution, the councillors congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for bringing in the amendment to the Citizenship Act.
Councillor Menino D’Cruz introduced the congratulatory motion and all councillors, except a few who remained silent, supported the motion.
The council also resolved to suspend licenses of 80 hand-carts and kiosks operating in the city.
As per rules of the Food and Drugs Administration, food cannot be prepared on handcarts so the council has decided to cancel the licenses.
Despite the rule that the handcarts could not be operated after 10 pm, food-carts were operating till midnight and beyond, CCP officials said.
Some of the license-holders had also sublet their businesses to third parties, the officials added. Meanwhile, Mayor Uday Madkaikar said he was trying to recover around Rs 15 crore pending dues towards house tax.
