The North Goa Principal District and Sessions Court has adjourned to May 4 the petition alleging breach of vote secrecy in the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections held on March 11.

The court directed that notices be sent to all respondents, asking them to file their replies before the next hearing.

The civil suit, filed this week, claims that voter confidentiality was compromised during the polls and seeks to have the election declared null and void.

The petition has been filed by lawyer Vishnu Naik, who contested as a candidate from the opposition Ami Panjekar panel, along with two others who later joined the suit.

The petitioners alleged that the numbering of counterfoils attached to ballot papers undermined the secrecy of the vote. “How can voter secrecy be maintained if a serial number is put on the counterfoil and the ballot paper is placed in the box for this assigned number?” Naik questioned in his plea.
