PANAJI
Former mayor Uday Madkaikar has alleged that a syndicate of beggars is operating in the city of Panaji and demanded action by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) in this matter.
The mayor alleged that some beggars are involved in the drugs trade as they had been earlier caught in such acts.
"Many of these beggars were earlier staying on the Campal ground and when I was CCP mayor, we had removed them from that place. That time, ganja was confiscated from them,” said Madkaikar during a news conference.
“This syndicate is also selling balloons and other items on the streets,” he added.
Madkaikar also pointed out that garbage is being dumped along the Miramar-Caranzalem road and alleged there is an attempt to kill trees along the road by dumping chemicals.
Madkaikar also demanded that the St Inez CCP library be immediately reopened as it will benefit senior citizens and other readers.
Former councillor Menino D'Sruz said he has written to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari about the bad state of the roads in the city.
