The main pipeline supplying water to villages of Merces and Chimbel was damaged near the Santa Cruz-Merces junction at Merces.

When The Goan visited the site, it was seen that the pipeline was damaged and tiles were placed over the damaged portion in an apparent bid to conceal the leakage.

When the tiles were removed, the water started gushing out of the pipeline in force.

Locals have suspected it could be a deliberate act as some labourers were seen using the water for bathing, washing and other purposes.

When The Goan informed PWD officials about the incident, they informed that the pipeline would be repaired, but the pipeline was not repaired even by late evening and water continued to leak.

Chimbel local and Revolutionary Goans member Ajay Kholkar said they had come to know of the incident some days back and noticed that tiles and sheets were placed over the damaged pipeline to hide the act.

“We suspect that labourers residing nearby have damaged the pipeline. The pipeline caters to consumers of Merces and Chimbel, and there is a high possibility of contamination due to the dirty surroundings. It is also important for PWD workers to remain proactive to prevent such incidents so that precious water is not wasted,” Kholkar said.
