The corporation of the City of Panaji has taken a step towards generating fuel and revenue from the decentralized processing of waste through the installation of a bio-digester.
One such bio-digester was commissioned on Friday at the hands of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Speaking to the media after inaugurating the bio-digester installed by CCP at Panaji, CM Sawant has said that there is a plan to install 12 such bio-digester plants in the CCP jurisdiction for production of clean and green energy.
Sawant informed that the CCP will supply biogas to restaurants in Panaji. He praised CCP for its door-to-door collection of waste and now going one step ahead by installing a system to decentralise the treatment of waste to generate fuel.
Now the CCP will initially supply the biogas produced to hotels free of cost and in the future, it will generate revenue from this.
CM Sawant said that the model of decentralised treatment of waste should be emulated by other municipal bodies in the state.
He said that municipalities can use the funds from the 14th and 15th Finance Commission. The CM also assured that the Government through the Directorate of Municipal Administration will help the municipalities to install such facilities.
CCP has been sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore by the BIRAC for the programme.
