Madgavkars, beware! Chain snatchers are on the prowl again in the city, attacking unsuspecting women with an eye on mangalsutras and chains.
Two chain snatching incidents were reported from the Aquem area of the city on Thursday morning, with the miscreants managing to make good with a mangalsutra of a woman in broad daylight. Another woman, however, survived the bid as the mangalsutra fell down while it was being snatched from her neck and the miscreants fleeing from the scene after she raised an alarm.
In both the cases, the culprits took advantage of the early morning calm when women are out to purchase milk.
The victim, Deepa Arandekar, told ‘The Goan’ that the miscreants targeted her when she was on her way to purchase milk and fish at Aquem. “I had just purchased milk packets and fish from a vendor, besides the morning newspaper, when suddenly two-motorcycle borne arrived on the spot and snatched the mangalsutra. I raised an alarm, but the miscreants on white colour scooter sped away”, she recalled.
Arandekar informed that the Mangalsutra would cost around Rs two lakh in the market.
In a similar incident around early morning, a woman Arti Chodankar survived the chain snatching bid as her mangalsutra fell down while being snatched and the miscreants fled after she raised an alarm.“I was just returning home after buying milk. I saw a person coming towards our house. First, he tried to enter into a neighbour’s house and then came behind me and tried to snatch the chain from my neck. Fortunately, the chain fell down and the miscreant fled after I raised an alarm”, Arti said.
The Margao police visited the residence of Deepa Arandekar, but have so far no clue over the identity and antecedents of the miscreants.
The miscreants are believed to have taken advantage of the heavy rains as they had covered themselves with rain wear.
