MARGAO

Members of the Chandor village panchayat have threatened to join the villagers in a rasta roko agitation in case the PWD authorities failed to carry out the repairs at Cotta on priority basis.

In a press statement issued by Sarpanch Celina Furtado and signed by three other panch members, the panchayat members failed to understand why the local MLA Clafacio Dias has not taken any interest and not taken the contractor to task, saying after the monsoon started, the potholes have worsened and have increased in depth and as a result the road in the ward has become a death trap.

Referring to the meeting convened outside the local MLA office on Saturday, June 30, 2018, the statement pointed out that a group of people approached the sarpanch on Monday, at the panchayat office seeking clarification as to why the road at Cotta ward was left incomplete without the repair of the potholes. “This, despite the instructions of the honourable PWD minister to take up the work of repairing the potholes from Savio Henriques’ house to Cotta bridge on priority, and thereafter hot mixing the roads as per the work order. However, contrary to the instructions of PWD minister, the contractor hot mixed all the roads as per tender and some other roads outside the work order and took up the repairs of the potholes on the main road leaving an approximately a kilometre of undone repairs,” the statement added and that the group chose to blame the panchayat for not completing the road when till date the reason why the road is not completed is best known to the contractor and PWD authorities.

“The fact is that the contractor and the PWD authorities failed the villagers and it appears that this was done deliberately to disturb the unity and divide the villagers,” the statement added.
