CANACONA
Incessant rains over the past 24 hours have caused Chapoli dam, the lifeline of Canconkars, to overflow on Saturday.
This is the second time in the monsoon season that the Chapoli dam reservoir has its storage full and began overflowing after attaining a capacity of 1122.25 ham.
The capacity was attained after Canacona recorded 167.40 mm of rains in 24 hrs and the Chapoli
dam’s Reduced Level reached 38.79 RL on Saturday morning.
Chapoli dam has the storage capacity upto 38.75 RL and once it breaches this level, water begins to overflow, activating the Chapoli rivulet, which joins the Devabhag river and the Palolem river, before flowing into the Arabian sea at northern-end of Palolem beach.
With rains throughout the night, water levels had risen sharply at all rivers in Canacona rivers, including those at Talpona, Galgibaga, Saleri and Agonda.
Several low lying areas, including the cultivated paddy fields, remained flooded in different parts of the taluka.
Chapoli dam had previously hit its maximum level and began to overflow on July 20, after significant rainfall in the region.
