The four-day lockdown was enforced to prevent crowds in the municipality, but the crowds returned to the Chaudi market as soon as the lockdown ended on Friday morning.
The crowds at the Chaudi market raised strong concern as hundreds of people were seen mingling with each other to buy their groceries and essential supplies.
Though no social distancing was followed, most people were, however, seen wearing facemasks.
On seeing the uncontrolled rush of people at Chaudi barely hours after the lockdown ended at 6 am, a local Succour Da Silva said the government machinery waste no time to devise a course of action given the Covid situation in Canacona.
“If we do not act quick in time to save lives, we will have no time to count the dead. Time and tide wait for no man,” he said.
Many concerned residents who witnessed the rush at Chaudi town blamed the system for allowing crowds to assemble in the commercial hub of the taluka.
Meanwhile, Covid cases continued to rise in Canacona and 85 new cases were detected on Friday, while one person succumbed to the virus.
The new cases were detected all over the taluka, including the municipal areas (45), Agonda (12), Shristhal and Poinguinim (11 each), Loliem (3), Gaondongrim (2) and Cola (1), with 788 active cases now in Canacona taluka.
Many people with Covid-like symptoms continue to rush for tests at the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) and elsewhere.
