The Panaji police have arrested a man from Chhattisgarh on charges of allegedly cheating a Goan businessman to the tune of Rs 4.99 lakh approx. on the pretext of supplying him with 'steel material'.
The 63-year-old accused has been identified as Tarun Bhattacharya while the company M/s Divyansi Enterprises’ (Chhattisgarh) Proprietor Amit Pandey is evading arrest.
Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan revealed that the Proprietor of Unplugged Metal Works in Taleigao, Abhilash Rajendra Velingkar alleged that the accused assured him to supply the material within 3-4 days of making part payment. Of the total of around Rs 14 lakh, the victim paid Rs 4.99 through cheques despite which he was not delivered the materials.
“A team headed by head constable Mahesh Mayekar was sent to Chhattisgarh who, with the assistance of Staff of Padmanabh police station nabbed Bhattacharya. The accused was brought to Goa on a transfer warrant and placed under arrest,” the officer said.
Bhattacharya, who confessed to the crime, has been remanded to two days of police custody. “The accused person has cheated more people, companies/firms in the different states amounting to several lakhs of rupees with the same modus operandi,” Valsan said.
