In a shocking incident, a woman is alleged to have killed her 14-month daughter on Saturday morning and later attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the Zuari Bridge, but was saved by staff at work on the new bridge.
According to sources, the woman, identified as Nimisha Gone, has been based in Germany with her husband Nilesh Gone and had arrived in the State only a few days ago. She was living along with her daughter at her father’s house in Chicalim.
"The incident may have happened at around 6 am. Gone is alleged to have strangulated her 14-month daughter and used a rope to get off the balcony of her house,” said a source.
“Gone is later believed to have slashed her wrist. She placed her cell phone in the garden and approached a neighbour for his vehicle on grounds of some work. While the neighbour gave her the car, she left from the house to Zuari bridge and after parking the car, is believed to have jumped off the bridge in a bid to end her life," said a source.
She was, however, rescued by staff of the DBL, as they were carrying out work on the new Zuari Bridge.
The DBL workers later handed over Gone to the Agassaim police and a police team admitted her to GMC for treatment.
When Agassaim police got in touch with the Vasco police station to report the incident, the death of the Gone's 14-month daughter came to light.
Vasco police rushed to the site and carried out primary investigation along with forensic teams at the site and later sent the body of the toddler for post-mortem.
When contacted, Vasco PI Kapil Nayak said he had received a call from Agassaim police station in the morning and upon investigation, the death of the toddler came to light.
"We got the contact details of the woman and calling her family member when we realised that her daughter was found dead in the house. We were then informed that the woman had killed her daughter before attempting suicide,” said PI Nayak.
“We have registered an offence under Section 302 and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act and we are ascertaining the motive of this crime. Her husband, Nilesh Gone, is working in Germany and she had returned to Goa along with her daughter a few days ago. We will send the body of the child for a post mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death," said Nayak.
