Animal Husbandry Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar on Friday announced that Chicalim would get a new veterinary hospital and added that municipal councils would get up to Rs 25 lakh to purchase a vehicle to shift cattle and other animals.
“The government has already purchased land and we will set up an animal husbandry hospital and people must not confuse this hospital with a Goushala. The hospital will cater to all animals and will also have a pet clinic to cater to domestic pets as well,” said Halarnkar, during his ‘Taluka Wise Minister’s Visit’ to Mormugao taluka.
“We have around 60,000 people in Vasco and Mormugao constituencies and almost every house has a pet dog or a cat, but sadly there is no hospital for these domestic pets and they have to go to distant locations for their pet care,” said Halarnkar.
The minister said stray cattle menace has to be handled by the municipal councils and panchayats at their level.
“These local governing bodies must tie up and have an MoU with the local NGOs or Goushala and the expense incurred to shift the cattle or animals will be paid by our department after the bills are raised.”
“We will give Rs 23 lakh each to the municipal councils to purchase a vehicle with hydraulic crane shift stray cattle and animals,” said Halarnkar.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that various stakeholders of the fishing community had placed their grievances and have also derived solutions to many issues.
“As far as the Kharewaddo jetty is concerned, we have had meetings with the MPA Chairman who has assured to plan a world-class fishing jetty by spending around Rs 150 crore after rehabilitation of a few fishermen.”
“As far as the stray cattle menace is concerned, Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Leo Rodrigues has decided to sign an MoU with Dhyan Foundation to avail the scheme of having funds to purchase a vehicle for animals and refund the costs incurred to shift animals to Goushala and this will clear the stray cattle menace issue in Vasco,” added Salkar.
