MARGAO
Failure to lift away the slaughtered chicken waste raised a stink in the SGPDA market on Wednesday, exposing the authorities hollow for its failure to put a mechanism for waste disposal in place.
The slaughtered chicken waste, stacked in bags, was infested with maggots as it's now three days since the waste was not cleared from the market.
In fact, the stink raised on the rear side of the chicken meat stalls at the SGPDA market spread across the mega complex, enveloping the entire market with foul odour.
Left with no option, a delegation of chicken meat owners rushed to the Margao Municipal Council to make a fervent plea to the Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar to intervene and put an end to the nuisance and health hazard.
Leave alone the customers visiting the PDA mega market, the chicken meat owners contended that neither they nor their workers could withstand the stench generated by the rotten waste in the market since the last three days. In fact, they feared that their workers may just leave the job since the situation has posed a health hazard to everyone.
Chicken waste is being lifted by an agency free of cost from the chicken stalls in the SGPDA market. The problem, however, arises when the agency plays truant for a day or two, with the rotting waste raising a stink in the market complex.
The chicken meat owners made a fervent plea to the MMC Chief Officer to put a system in place wherein the civic body or an alternative agency would automatically step in to lift the waste in the event the concerned agency does not turn up to collect the waste.
After giving a patient hearing, Chief Officer Sankhwalkar assured the delegation that he would try and put a system in place in the event the agency fails to lift away the waste.
“The agency is appointed by the Goa Waste Management Corporation. There was some issue in respect of the contractor. We will sort out the issue immediately”, the CO said.
