In an interesting development, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has found out that the total quantity of matured waste piled up inside the Sonsodo Waste management shed is estimated around 8000 metric tones.
The revelation runs contrary to the figure worked out by the Margao Municipal Council, which had pegged the total waste stacked inside the shed to 10,000 metric tons. The MMC had planned to take up remediation of the matured waste piled up inside the Sonsodo waste management shed since the last three years by floating a tender, estimated around Rs two crore.
The ambitious project, however, came a cropper after the Director, Urban Department declined to accord the administrative approval for the remediation project.
With the Sonsodo waste management issue now under the close scrutiny of the High Court, the GWMC has not only assessed the total waste piled up inside the shed, but has issued the work order to the contractor to start the remediation work.
GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins informed that contractor would start the remediation work anytime from now since the Corporation has issued the work order. He, however, said the contractor would mobilize the machinery and would put in place logistics to first cart out the waste piled up inside the shed before its remediation.
“Our assessment has revealed that around 8000 metric tons of waste has piled up inside the shed. The entire remediation operation may cost less since the contractor has charged less for treatment of per metric ton of waste”, Martins said.
The Margao Municipal Council has already deposited funds to the tune of the Rs two crore with the GWMC upon directions from the High Court to take up the remediation.
When the issue of remediation of the accumulated waste had come up before the High Court on Monday, the Court had observed that the process set in motion by the GWMC amounts to sufficient compliance of its order.
The Court had made the observations after the Advocate General, on behalf of GWMC, had stated in the Court that the work of remediation will start in all earnest within this week itself, further pointing out that the necessary groundwork for the work to commence has already been completed.
This will be the third time in the last three years that the GWMC will carry out the job of remediation of the waste piled up inside the Sonsodo waste management shed for want of treatment of waste worth its name.
