The chief engineer of a hotel in Bogmalo was arrested and later released on bail on Thursday in connection with the deaths of two labourers inside the hotel s septic tank. According to Mormugao DySP Sucheta Dessai, the accused, Suresh Bhaskaran, had applied for anticipatory bail on July 18.

The arrest formalities were completed and he was subsequently released on bail upon furnishing surety as per the orders of the Sessions Court at Margao. It may be recalled that two labourers “ Gajanan Patil (27) from Baina and Vishal Pius Noronha (33) of Mangalore, but staying near Safi Masjid Baina “ of the hotel at Bogmalo had died of suffocation on June 16 after they had gone inside to clean a septic tank. The next day, Vasco Police had registered an offence of negligence against the contractor of the hotel. The contractor, Sunil Singh, however fled from the hotel and is still absconding, said the police. The police had also recorded the statements of the general manager and the hotel s engineer.
With thermocol waste and a stinking environment posing nuisance to citizens, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to approach the government asking it to hand over the wholesale fish market to the civic body for upkeep and maintenance.
