OLD GOA
A group of locals from Chimbel have objected to the construction of slab over a storm water drain by residents of a housing colony at Goulebhat.
Acting on a complaint from the aggrieved locals, the Chimbel panchayat led by Sarpanch Manisha Chopdekar and Panchayat Secretary Rajendra Gawas conducted an inspection of the activity.
The locals stated that the storm water drain is a traditional one and has been existent for ages.
“Rain water passes through this drain and if it is allowed to be closed by construction of a slab, it would result in its clogging which would prove disastrous,” a local Avinash Shirvoikar informed and demanded that work on the same should be immediately stopped.
The colony residents, however, said they would take the responsibility to clean the drain if it gets clogged.
“Sewage water passes through the drain, due to which we are covering it with a slab,” the residents pointed out.
However, the locals were in no mood to listen and said they would not allow the drain to be closed.
Later, the panchayat authorities asked the residents to construct concrete blocks and place them over the drain, instead of constructing a permanent slab.
