Chinchinim-Assolna road turns into garbage dumping ground

Chinchinim-Assolna road turns into garbage dumping ground

MARGAO

The Chinchinim-Assolna main road at Sucaldem has become a waste dumping ground for unscrupulous elements in recent times.

Even as the Chinchinim panchayat has put in place a mechanism for timely collection of dry waste from the households, dumping of the waste along the roadside at Sucaldem has not stopped, with sources suspecting that waste from other villages finds its way to the place.

When asked to shed light on the waste disposal at Sucaldem, Chinchinim panch Frank Viegas pointed out that the trash from outside the village finds its way to Sucaldem. “Chinchinim has roped in a contractor to collect dry waste from the households and has streamlined the system of collection. Hence, the waste that finds its way along the roadside at Sucaldem comes from other villages,” he said.

He added: “I have got the waste collected from the roadside at least on four occasions, but the dumping has not stopped. Our information suggests that the miscreants dump the waste in the wee hours of the day under the cover of darkness."

To tide over the problem, the Chinchinim panchayat is believed to have mooted a CCTV surveillance project to trap the unscrupulous elements. “The proposal did not initially find favour with the district Collector, who maintained that funds under the scheme cannot be used for CCTV to monitor garbage dumping. Hence, we have mooted a revised proposal wherein the CCTV has been proposed for surveillance,” he said.
