Churchill calls AAP's oximeter campaign in Benaulim a political ‘natak’ with eye on 2022 Assembly polls

Even as the AAP volunteers attired in yellow T-shirts started moving door-to-door in his fiefdom armed with oximeters, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao termed the exercise as a “political natak” to fool the people with an eye on elections.

The NCP MLA also said the government headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has done good work in handling the situation. He, however, demanded Health Minister Vishwajit Rane should further improve the situation by procuring ventilators and oxygen to save lives.

Asserting that oximeters only help to ascertain the oxygen levels, Churchill demanded to know whether AAP has any plans to provide ventilators and oxygen concentrators to the people.

“Does AAP any backup plan to increase the oxygen level if it falls below the prescribed level? Will one-time checking of oxygen level help to save people?” Churchill questioned.

The Benaulim MLA reminded, “At least the immunity boosters I distributed helped boost the immunity of the people. These oximeters will not help,” he said.

When the media sought to know his opinion on the performance of the BJP-led government in handling Covid, Churchill said, “No government in the world could handle the pandemic. Even USA President Donald Trump could not save the lives of Americans.”

AAP hits back

PANAJI: AAP on Saturday slammed Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao’s comments on its ‘Goans Against Corona’ campaign and demanded to know what he has done for the well-being of his constituents during the pandemic.

Terming Alemao’s comment as “laughable”, AAP said that the MLA’s stance is wrong and dangerous. The party also criticized Alemao for praising Goa BJP government’s failed Covid-19 strategy.

“Oximeters are a proven tool globally to combat coronavirus. It’s clear that our campaign has scared the MLAs. They should either start helping Goans or move out of the way,” AAP interim convenor Rahul Mhambre stated.
