With the high profile Benaulim constituency witnessing a political churn with the recent political developments, former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao has on Wednesday formally announced his decision to contest the 2027 Assembly election from Benaulim.

Churchill’s decision to announce his decision assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that when the Aam Admi Party and the Congress had come in sharp focus over the recent developments when AAP leader Paul Lobo along with his workers quit the Arvind Kejrival party earlier this week.

In fact, many an eyebrow has been raised in Benaulim political circles over Churchill’s decision to announce his decision to contest the 2027 assembly election when the election is around a year and half away.

Formally announcing his decision to contest on Wednesday in the presence of former Benaulim Sarpanch Remy Fernandes, Churchill said he has every right to contest the 2027 Assembly election for the simple reason that Benaulim has not seen any development since his exit in 2022.  “I challenge anyone to show me a single project that has taken shape in Benaulim in the last three years and half. Whatever development I had done in Benaulim is there for all to see”, he said.

Saying that he had proposed a Primary health Centre in Benaulim during his tenure as Benaulim MLA in the last term, Churchill said the PHC is yet to become a reality despite sanctioned by the government. “I had proposed the health centre in Benaulim on the lines of the Navelim PHC which had I built during my stint as PWD Minister. I would like to complete the project  after getting elected in the 2027 election”, he added.

Recalling the three bridges he had built over river Sal, Assola-Cavelossim, Varca-Telaulim and Benaulim-Navelim, Churchill said no fresh development has taken place in Benaulim since 2022.

To a question, Churchill ruled out fielding any candidate for the upcoming Zilla panchayat polls, saying that the last ZP election in 2020 had seen the defeat of  his candidate followed by his defeat in the 2022 Assembly election.
