Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao-backed group in the Benaulim panchayat retained its hold over the panchayat when its candidate Nilesh Prabhudesai was elected to the
post of Deputy Sarpanch on Tuesday.
In the elections, Nilesh was declared elected to the post when he defeated Felicia Noronha by 6-5 votes.
The election for the vacant post was necessitated after then Deputy Sarpanch John Albuquerque was voted out of office in a no-confidence motion.
Soon after Nilesh was declared elected as the new Benaulim Deputy Sarpanch, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao made his presence felt at the Panchayat ghar to wish Nilesh Prabhudesai and the ruling group.
Churchill later told the media that he has been supporting the Benaulim panchayat to bring about development in the village. “I have no interest in the village panchayat. My only interest is that I want to take up development in the village along with the panchayat body members,” he added.
