Citizens protest filling of govt land with Sonsodo inert waste

MARGAO

The Old Market area of the commercial capital witnessed an uproar on late Thursday after a group of citizens protested over the filling of government land by the Margao Municipal Council with inert waste from Sonsodo.

After truckloads of inert waste from Sonsodo were being dumped on the government land, which was acquired years ago to set up a non-conventional energy park, citizens Crydon Medeira and Milagres Fernandes questioned the rationale behind the filing of land in the night.

While the contractor at the site maintained that he is in possession of the permission of the authorities to fill up the land with inert waste, both Crydon and Milagres pointed out that the contractor ought to have produced the permission and displayed the same at the site in question.

Crydon said he has intimated the matter to the Police as well as the TCP Department and the District Collector to send the flying squad and stop the work.

“If they have the necessary permissions, how come the work is being carried out late at night. We want the authorities to come to the site and stop the work or produce the permissions”, both Crydon and Milagres demanded.

The Fatorda police rushed to the site and told the contractor to produce the requisite permission from the authorities. The contractor later produced the permission from the TCP department, with the order saying the office may not have any objection to the Margao Municipal Council from carrying out the filling of the land of TCP Department, admeasuring 163900 square metres as sought by the civic body.

The TCP department, however, imposed a host of conditions, including the condition the MMC should obtain NOC of Goa State Pollution Control Board before carrying out the filling.

The Fatorda police later directed the contractor to stop the work and produce all the relevant permissions.
