Margao Municipal councillor Mahesh Amonkar on Wednesday made an impassioned plea to all concerned not to vitiate the atmosphere by raking up the temple issue at Sancoale, saying issues, if any, can be resolved by the parties or through legal forum.
Addressing the media, the MMC councillor, who had recently taken up cudgels for the Muslim community in support of the long-pending demand for kabrastan in the city, pointed out that Goans, irrespective of caste and creed, had lived peacefully with amity and brotherhood over the decades.
He appealed to members of certain Hindu organisations not to vitiate the atmosphere by issuing threats to disrupt the novenas of the feast of St Joseph Vaz, saying such attempts will only result in communal disharmony amongst different religious communities.
“Jayesh Naik has been my good friend, and I request him that if there’s any issue, let it be resolved through the proper forum and across the table. Let the Chief Minister and the government intervene to resolve the issue, but nothing should be done at the site by holding poojas which will only further vitiate the atmosphere in the State,” he said.
He also took exception to the silence of the political leaders to the issue and other issues such as the burning kabrastan issue.
