SANGUEM
Embarrassed by media reports and widespread criticism over its failure to depute a teacher at the Government Primary School at Valkini-Uguem in Sanguem for nearly two weeks, prompting the PTA to request a local youth to conduct classes, the education department finally posted a teacher to the school.
The Goan had reported on Thursday that 18 students in Classes 1-2 at the Valkini GPS were left without a teacher, following the retirement of the existing teacher on August 31 and the reluctance of the replacement teacher to accept the posting.
Following requests from the School PTA, a local youth, Premanand Rekdo, a past pupil of the school and a trained D.Ed teacher, agreed to conduct classes for students in the absence of a government teacher.
After having conducted classes for three days and following media reports on Thursday, the education department finally reacted and deputed a trained English Teacher to the school with immediate effect.
While locals have hailed the deputation of a government teacher, they were critical of the education department for its delay in sending a teacher to the school for two weeks.
When contacted, Rekdo told The Goan that the education department should be more serious in ensuring that teachers are replaced immediately.
“The department has a record of dates of retirement of all teachers and the process to replace teachers should be done well in advance. However, I am happy to have got the opportunity to teach at the village school for three days,” said Rekdo.
