Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said that the State government is contemplating introducing an online booking system for visitors to Dudhsagar waterfall. Parrikar also informed that a meeting of the Goa State Wildlife Board has been convened on December 16 to deliberate on the various issues pertaining to wildlife areas.
He was responding to Sanvordem MLA Deepak Prabhu Pausakar who pointed out that due to restricted number of trips by the jeeps permitted, tourists have to return without visiting the waterfall.
"All 431 jeep owners should also be permitted to make trips to Dudhsagar as this is one of the sources of employment after mining activities in these areas stopped. During the current season 1,50,000 people have already visited this place. As there is a restriction on the number of trips to 225, visitors have to return without visiting the waterfall", pointed out Pauskar.
Responding, Parrikar informed, "We have called a meeting of the Goa State Wildlife Board on December 16. This issue is one of the agendas. So the final decision would be taken on the recommendations of the Board itself."
"Once it was declared a wildlife area, the villages suffered. In 2012, the government put a condition that only permitted vehicles would be allowed to operate and the same should only be of those from the village. So they were permitted to operate after being registered. The main idea was getting employment to those who had lost their livelihood," he stated.
"Dudhsagar being a wildlife area, has a carrying capacity. There cannot be uncontrolled movement of vehicles. The number of vehicles permitted increased to 431 mainly due to greed. Now I have asked the Forest Department for classification of vehicles. Those who have become government servants, their licence will not be renewed after a particular time. Secondly, people from outside Collem have also registered. And the third issue is one person owns more than one vehicle. We will deliberate on these issues. Firstly the number would be reduced, secondly, after creating facilities, the number of trips would be increased to some extent", he stated.
"Third issue is that people come to visit Dudhsagar but have to return without visiting the fall. This is mainly because booking is done at the venue. We are proposing for online booking. If there is no booking, they need not come. However, we are yet to finalise the same", he said.
