Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said he has ordered a detailed inquiry into the death of an undergraduate student who allegedly shot himself hours after an FIR was registered against him over a garbage dumping incident at Gaunswaddo, Mapusa.

Speaking to the media, Sawant was asked whether the registration of an FIR was necessary for what was described as a roadside garbage dumping offence. In response, the Chief Minister reiterated that an inquiry has been initiated and that all aspects of the matter would be examined.

The student was found dead on Friday, shortly after Mapusa Police registered a case against him in connection with an alleged garbage dumping incident that had triggered widespread attention on social media following the circulation of a viral video.

The video purportedly showed local residents confronting the youth over alleged dumping of waste along a public road in Gaunswaddo, leading to public criticism and online discussion.

While police suspect the case to be a suicide, officials have stated that the exact cause of death will be determined only after the completion of the post-mortem examination.
