CM reiterates need for digitisation in taxi services

PANAJI
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said the recent attack on a taxi driver in Pernem has been the latest incident triggering the urgent need for digitisation in taxi services.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Directorate of Prosecution’s new office premises at Patto on Friday, the CM reiterated that the government needs cooperation from the people and stakeholders.

“In yesterday’s (Thursday) incident, someone booked a taxi, attacked the driver and attempted to flee with the vehicle. If proper digital systems such as a booking app were in place, it would be much easier for the police to identify the culprits within the shortest time possible,” he said.

Pernem police registered an FIR against six unidentified persons for attempting to kill the 65-year-old taxi driver with a sharp weapon.

Sawant, also the Home Minister, sought cooperation from the public and stakeholders, adding that all stakeholders should ensure that digitisation and technology are the only solutions. “We need to follow and implement it,” he added.

He also announced a number of administrative reforms and infrastructure upgrades in the legal sector. As part of the government’s efforts to streamline the prosecution system, Sawant distributed laptops to all Public Prosecutors -- a move that had been pending for over 15 years.

He further announced that additional posts in the prosecution department have been sanctioned and will be filled soon.

Regarding the functioning of government offices in old buildings, the CM stated these would be relocated to new premises within two years. “The shifting of 40-year-old government offices to new premises is underway. All government offices functioning from old buildings will be relocated within two years,” he said.

The Prosecution Department, which earlier functioned from a 60 sq mtrs office at Shram Shakti Bhavan, has now been relocated to the BSNL premises in Patto. The new space includes a dedicated library, separate cabins for senior officials and improved workstations for staff.

“Taluka-level offices for the PPs will also be renovated,” the CM said.
