Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the State government has decided to build two new bridges in Bicholim taluka to cater to growing traffic between Bicholim and Sakhali.
While the existing bridge linking Vithalapur-Sakhali would be upgraded, a new bridge would be constructed along the Surla-Volvoi Ferry route.
Speaking to local reporters, Sawant said the two bridges were found necessary given the sharp rise in traffic along the Bicholim-Sakhali route, which had led to frequent traffic congestions.
“The State government has decided to upgrade the existing Vithalapur-Sakhali footbridge and replace it with a bridge for light motor vehicles, along the lines of the newly constructed Virdi-Amona bridge,” said Sawant.
The chief minister said there had been a long-pending demand from villagers for a new bridge to enable them travel to and from Sakhali town.
“The new bridge will be 10 metres wide to facilitate movement of light motor vehicles like cars and two-wheelers. There were initial plans to construct this bridge only one-way, but the government decided on a wider bridge in view of the traffic.”
Stating that the foundation stone for the upgraded bridge would be laid within two months, Sawant said work on the bridge would be undertaken after considering all aspects.
The CM also mentioned about plans to construct a new bridge linking Surla and Volvoi villages for the benefit of residents from Volvoi, Surla and surrounding areas.
