PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasised the urgent need to combat sex trafficking in Goa urging strengthening cooperation between the State, source states and countries.
Addressing the inaugural of the two-day international consultation against sex trafficking, Sawant stated the illicit trade is not only a societal challenge but a degradation of humanity.
“There are laws under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for protecting women but we must also create an environment that prevents exploitation of women, who are revered as Goddesses in India," he said.
Sawant stressed the importance of collaboration between Goa and source states and countries, recognising that trafficking is a transnational issue requiring united efforts. “Together, we can build the necessary partnerships to ensure that Goa becomes a safe haven for women and children. United efforts are key to ending this crime,” he stated.
ARZ Director Arun Pandey spoke about the financial motivations behind sex trafficking, stating, “Money is generated through the exploitation of victims.” He emphasized that sex trafficking is a global phenomenon, with India serving as both a source and transit destination for such activities. "Given Goa’s status as a tourist State, it remains particularly vulnerable to these crimes," he said.
Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo emphasized the importance of raising awareness about sex trafficking to ensure effective measures and help victims reintegrate into society.
