Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that the Central government’s order extending the ban on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) will streamline the Goa government’s efforts in curbing illegal activities.
“We have clamped down on such banned organizations in the past. The order will facilitate more effective action against these activities and we will continue to maintain our strong stance,” he said on the sidelines of a BJP meeting held in Panaji.
The CM also hailed the Centre for its decision while highlighting that these organizations have been causing unrest in the country.
The Ministry of Home Affairs order extends the ban on SIMI as an ‘unlawful association’ for an additional five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The decision followed as a response to SIMI’s involvement in activities that threaten the sovereignty, security, and integrity of India, including fomenting terrorism and disturbing peace and communal harmony.
