CMC asks all fish sellers to operate inside market

Fisherwomen seek relief in rent at Canacona fish market

CMC asks all fish sellers to operate inside market Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar and others hold talks with fish sellers in Canacona.

CANACONA

Stating that the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) would look into demands of the fisherwomen to waive off a certain amount of rent at the fish market, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar asked the fisherwomen to conduct their trade only inside the municipal fish market and not outside the market.
“The fish market will not be for any use, if the fish vendors trade outside the market. Fish vendors must compulsorily sell fish only in the municipal fish market,” Naikgaunkar told two fish community groups who called on him on Thursday.
“We are constructing a new fish market with all amenities in Chaudi. Fish sellers of the Pagi and Gabit communities should sell fish only inside the market.”
In Canacona, women belonging to both Pagi and Gabit communities are engaged in selling fish. While fisherwomen of one community sell fish outside the fish market, those from the other community groups also sell fish outside the fish market.
This has affected the business of other fish vendors who sell inside the fish market.
The CMC chairperson had invited women from both groups to the municipal office on Thursday for a discussion and decision on the matter.
CMC Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar, CMC Dy Chairperson Narcisco Fernandes and three councillors belonging to Pagi community, Gandesh Madgaonkar, Amrita Pagi and Laxuman Pagi, were present for the discussion.
The fish vendors from both communities were told in clear terms to sit inside the market and sell their fish.
It was also informed that wholesale fish sellers should also be located inside the market.
“If this is not done, action will be taken against both the groups for defying and ignoring the directions,” Naigaunkar warned the fisherwomen.
He further informed that the fish vendors affiliated with the fish market have not paid the municipal rent since the last few years and asked them to pay the rent immediately.
The fish vendors, however, requested the CMC to waive the rent.
“We could not pay the rent as there was no business during the Covid pandemic. The CMC should wave off this rent or at least given us some exemption,” pleaded a fish vendor.
Naigaunkar then told them that he would present their request in the next council meeting.
Naikgaunkar also informed the fisherwomen that there are various schemes by the fisheries department and that, a camp would soon be conducted with officers from the fisheries department.
