Facing flak for their absence at Sonsodo on Tuesday when leachate flowing from the site caused road accidents, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar with officials in tow descended at the waste dumping site on Wednesday to reassure Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco that leachate will not flow again from Sonsodo on the main road.

A visibly upset Curtorim MLA warned the Chief Officer that he would not remain a silent spectator if the leachate again finds its  way on the road, warning that he would lead the people in stopping Margao Municipal garbage trucks from entering Sonsodo.

Chief Officer Sankhwalkar along with Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai and other officials descended at Sonsodo to take stock over the situation after leachate from the garbage trucks triggered uproar and tension on the road.

During inspection, the Chief Officer explained to the Curtorim MLA that the civic body has already capped leachate from flowing from the plant outside. He said the leachate which flowed onto the main road was not from the plant, but from the garbage trucks parked on the sloppy road. He blamed the truck drivers behind the incident, saying they had parked the vehicles on the road, from where the leachate from the vehicle flowed onto the main road.

“This will not be repeated again. Strict instructions have been issued to the drivers and officials to ensure that the garbage trucks are not parked on the road again”, he said.

Sankhwalkar told the MLA that he had immediately sent civic officials to the site, but they did not make their presence felt after finding a mob assembled at the place. “We will take all steps to ensure the incident is not repeated again”, he added.
