Congress demands CBI probe in well contamination at Dabolim

VASCO
The Congress on Wednesday demanded that the CBI be asked to investigate the contamination of wells at Matvem-Dabolim.

The delegation of Congress including GPCC President Amit Patkar, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and Captain Viriato Fernandes along with others visited Matvem to inspect the contaminated well at Matvem on Wednesday evening.

GPCC President Amit Patkar accused the State government of doing nothing about the contamination of wells in Dabolim. "We don't know why the government is not acting in the matter. This entire area has been suffering due to the contamination, which has been caused due to seepage of fuel in the ground for many years. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant must hand over the investigation to the CBI to ascertain if anyone is stealing the fuel that has led to health hazards to Goans," said Patkar.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said Mormugao was a ticking bomb. "The State government is more focussed on event management because they are helpless and careless on any disaster that could happen on vital installations like Goa Airport and petroleum storage tanks,” said Alemao.

“The government does not care for locals because they have not yet intervened despite the leakage not being found for so many days now. The fields and groundwater are polluted and senior citizens and locals are forced to drink contaminated water.”

“We request the CM to immediately convene a meeting of all stakeholders to handle this ticking bomb and stop playing with the lives of the people," said Alemao.

Captain Viriato Fernandes also spoke on the occasion.
