Govt to establish waste management institution

GSPCB exhibits mini plants, says can be used by shack operators

The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced the establishment of a Waste Management Institution in the State.

Inaugurating a three-day conference organised by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), Sawant informed about the collaboration between GWMC, Goa Institute of Management and Goa Institute of Public Administration & Rural Development to establish a Waste Management Institution in the State.

During the conference, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) officials showcased two model mini sewage treatment plants (STP), installed at its premises at Saligao. The facility was inspected by the Chief Minister.

GSPCB chairman Mahesh Patil said that the plants of 5,000 litre capacity unit, priced at Rs 5 lakh onwards can be used by shack operators for their sewage management during the season, dismantled and reinstalled during the next season.

“The water from the mini plants can also be reused. If the need be, several shacks can combine together and purchase the mini plants,” the Chairman said.

The trial plants at GSPCB office have been developed by BITS Pilani Goa campus and Geobag Company from Coimbatore.

The three-day conference promises to be a crucial platform for participants to strategise and implement effective solid waste resource management within their respective local bodies, reaffirming their commitment to achieve the vision of a zero-waste State.
