Coal handling stench triggers fresh protest in Mormugao

Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar speaks with officials of Adani Mormugao Port Terminal Pvt. Ltd (AMPTPL).

VASCO
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Tuesday afternoon led a delegation of local residents to meet officials of Adani Mormugao Port Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (AMPTPL) following fresh complaints of foul smell during coal handling operations at the port, triggering concern among people in Vasco and surrounding areas.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Amonkar said he had earlier issued a three-day ultimatum to the company after residents complained of an unbearable odour emanating from coal handling activities.
“The foul smell had subsided after the ultimatum, but strangely, on Monday, people once again began complaining of the same problem. This has caused unrest and anxiety among residents,” he said.
The MLA stated that he sought a detailed explanation from the head of AMPTPL, Sandeep Roy, regarding the recurrence of the issue. He also demanded a written assurance outlining the corrective measures the company proposes to undertake, along with a clear and specific timeline to resolve the matter on a permanent basis.
Amonkar made it clear that temporary relief would not suffice and that the people of Mormugao expect a lasting solution. “Residents cannot be made to suffer repeatedly. There must be concrete steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” he said.
He further asserted that the fight against the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) and coal handling units would continue until pollution-related concerns are effectively addressed. “This fight is for the health and well-being of our people. We will not step back until accountability is fixed and corrective action is implemented,” he added.
AMPTPL Head Sandeep Roy assured MLA Sankalp Amonkar that a written commitment detailing the corrective measures and timeline will be provided within 24 hours. Residents who accompanied the delegation expressed hope that the fresh intervention would bring a permanent solution and prevent any further distress caused by foul emissions from port activities.
