Cochlear Implant surgery conducted
PANAJI: The first Cochlear Implant surgery in Goa was performed at VM Salgaocar hospital at Chicalim.
A team of doctor’s led by Dr Parag Sawant, consultant ENT surgeon at the hospital under the guidance of ENT surgeon from Mumbai Dr Milind Kirtane, performed the surgery on three children suffering from congenital hearing loss. The children received financial support through the government's Goa Mediclaim and Medical Reimbursement Scheme.
The surgery is a highly skilled ear surgery and involves extensive collaboration between Cochlear implant surgeons, anaesthetists, audiologists, speech and language therapists and pediatricians.
The Cochlear implant amplifies sound and mimics the natural hearing function of the inner ear through electronic stimulation.
