Coconut plucker dies, wife injured in Karmalghat road mishap

CANACONA: A 46-year-old coconut plucker from Bhupar-Gaondongrim died while his wife was injured when their two-wheeler and a KTC bus collided with each other at the Karmalghat slope on Sunday.

Accordng to reports, the mishap took place as Ratnakar Velip, a government-trained and approved ‘Padeli’ (coconut plucker) and his wife, Ratiya, were on their scooter riding up the narrow NH66 highway along the Karmalghat.

Velip was attempting to overtake a vehicle, when their scooter was struck by an oncoming KTC bus which was descending the slope.

Both riders were flung off the scooter and sustained injuries in the mishap. They were first moved to the Balli Health Centre, and later shifted to the Sought Goa District Hospital at Margao, where Ratnakar Velip was declared dead on arrival.

Canacona Police said the last rites were conducted at the Poinguinim crematorium on Monday.
