PONDA:
The Ponda fire station officials received a call at around 9.28 pm and managed to douse the fire, from spreading further in the area.
“Around 50 bags of dry waste collected recently by two labourers appointed by the panchayat turned to ash. Last week, the department of science and technology had lifted around 1 ton of dry waste,” said a panch member.
“The fire destroyed the waste which was kept near the panchayat building at Nageshi-Bandora. Our water tank which is adjacent to the panchayat building also caught fire and was damaged in the process. We suspect that the waste may have been deliberately set on fire,” the panch added.
One held while dumping garbage
CANACONA: Another non-Goan was caught red-handed while attempting to dump garbage brought on a two-wheeler along the highway at Gulem on Saturday.
The NGO ‘Team Goenkar’ caught Nikhilesh Mahajan, who runs a restaurant in Agonda, while he was allegedly dumping his garbage along the petrol pump road at Gulem.
“He had brought two bags filled with garbage on a scooter and was making moves to unload them, when he was apprehended by Goenkar members,” Goenkar general secretary Vikas Bhagat told The Goan.
The Canacona police was alerted of the incident and he was taken into police custody.
Team Goenkar appreciated the swift action by the Canacona police led by PI Philomeno Costa. Earlier on Thursday night, two Nepali youth employed at a restaurant in Palolem were caught red-handed while attempting to dump wet garbage along the Agonda road.
Khola local dies of accident injuries
CANACONA: A 60-yr-old differently-abled man from Matvemoll-Khola died of injuries while riding his specialised scooter in Canacona.
According to reports, Narayan Velip, was seriously injured a few days ago, while he was riding the scooter. He was moved to Canacona Health Centre (CHC) in a serious condition and was immediately rushed to Hospicio Hospital, Margao. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to GMC at Bambolim, but died of injuries on Saturday. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
